Blue by – Fetish for beauty

This Blue by series is inspired by the work of the photographer Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969).
Blumenfeld, born in Germany, mastered photography in the Netherlands. He started making portraits in a store for women's undergarments where he accidentally discovered a dark room. Years later, he started his career in fashion photography in Paris, working only in black and white. He liked to experiment with different techniques such as double exposure, distortion and solarization. From the moment color photography became possible, he transformed his original black and white compositions into color. His special repertoire of shapes and colors, that he developed after his departure to the United States in 1941, made him one of the most original fashion and portrait photographers in New York.

Deze Blue by serie is geïnspireerd op het werk van de fotograaf Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969).
Blumenfeld, geboren in Duitsland, maakte zich fotografie eigen in Nederland. Hij startte met het maken van portretten in een winkel voor dames ondermode waarin hij bij toeval een donkere kamer ontdekte. Jaren later startte hij zijn carrière in de modefotografie in Parijs en werkte alleen in zwart-wit. Hij experimenteerde graag met verschillende technieken als dubbele belichting, vervorming en solarisatie. Maar vanaf het moment dat kleurenfotografie tot de mogelijkheden behoorde, transformeerde hij zijn originele zwart-wit composities naar kleur. Zijn bijzondere repertoire van vormen en kleuren dat hij ontwikkelde na zijn vertrek naar de Verenigde Staten in 1941 maakte hem tot een van de origineelste mode- en portretfotografen in New York.
